Witton-le-Wear to Bishop Auckland
| 5th May 2025 | This general update for walkers concerns current access and navigation on Section 8 of the Weardale Way (Witton-le-Wear to Bishop Auckland) with particular regard to where it differs from what might be published elsewhere on this site or in our Weardale Way Pocket Guide.
Local conditions and heavy use quickly degrade infrastructure – particularly timber – causing impromptu and possibly persisting access and/or navigation issues. The chances of the trail changing in some way – short and long-term – is even more likely in urban areas. If your experience is different to what we’ve published here, you can help by leaving your insights in the comments.
Witton Castle
Previously, the route has passed directly through the castle grounds from where you can only glimpse the uppermost parts of the building. However, I’ve decided to include a short route option to the castle itself because, not only is it an interesting building but it also offers a cafe, cellar bar and fish-&-chip shop (cafe and bar appear to be open all year round but check their website for yourself). Can’t think why it’s taken me so long to do it.
Broken Bank
The steep slopes of Broken Bank – overlooking the River Wear, between Escomb and Bishop Auckland – are vulnerable to erosion and, as pointed out in the guide book, continue to slide very slowly towards the river. Traversing the slopes remains challenging in places and potentially very muddy (though it was dry when we visited).
I’ve walked it for well over two decades and I’m surprised that it’s changed as little as it has. So, whilst there’s nothing much to report for the moment, there very easily could be – particularly after prolonged heavy weather. If you have any problems, don’t forget to let us know!
Conclusion
The most significant difference to the route as published in the guide book is our inclusion of Witton Castle as both a refreshment stop and place of interest. Otherwise there’s been little change to Section 8 besides forestry (the conifers on the approach to the River Wear when leaving Witton Castle Park have been felled), vegetation growth and some fencing works. It’s notable that WW way-marking for this section isn’t nearly as good as it has been on previous sections and needs to be improved, together with many of the stiles – so take care, don’t assume that the stile is solid or capable of taking your weight. A GPS file from The Durham Cow will undoubtedly help with navigation.
That’s it for Section 8. We hope this helps. If you have anything to add please feel free to do it in the comments. Happy Walking!
