As part of the continuing development works affecting the south side of the river between Queen Alexandra Bridge and Wearmouth Bridge, Section 14 of the Weardale Way is once again closed, which could persist until 2023. When we visited, we found the situation to be messy with no official diversions in place around the affected area between the riverside footpath after The Saltgrass pub in Deptford and Wearmouth Bridge.
Consequently we’re recommending two routes for which we provide GPS route files available as FREE DOWNLOADS from the shop: Option A stays on the S side of the river, heading towards the city. It rejoins the WW at the Wearmouth Bridge and thereafter follows the original route. Option B is slightly longer and crosses the Queen Alexandra Bridge to join the C2C trail on the north side of the river. Option A is arguably the most interesting though B will generally be the sunniest. Let us know how you get on in the comments.
