Stockton-on-Tees to South Bank
| 17th May 2025 | This general update for walkers concerns current access and navigation on Section 13 of the Teesdale Way (Stockton-on-Tees to South Bank) with particular regard to where it differs from what might be published elsewhere on this site or in our Teesdale Way Pocket Guide.
Local conditions and heavy use quickly degrade infrastructure – particularly timber – causing impromptu and possibly persisting access and/or navigation issues. The chances of the trail changing in some way – short and long-term – is even more likely in urban areas. Stockton-on-Tees
Extensive public works are being undertaken in Stockton, affecting the Teesdale Way on the riverside past the Teesquay Millenium Footbridge – possibly until Spring 2026. I can’t vouch for the diversion offered as I didn’t follow it. Instead I opted to cross Victoria Bridge from where I made my way to Infinity Bridge and rejoined the trail on the other side of the river.
Tees Barrage
During my review of this section, pedestrian access through the Tees Barrage – following the preferred course of the Teesdale Way – was blocked. I haven’t been able to find out why or for how long so I’ve offered the alternative route that I took on the day, as an option. Given that it also passes close to a hospitality outlet I think it’s as good as any.
Conclusion
Other than the issues listed above, the route is as published in the guide book for this section. Specific Teesdale Way way-marking is generally consistent and well maintained and even easier to follow with a GPS file from The Durham Cow. There’s little infrastructure on this section (no stiles or gates) though there are two long flights of steps onto and off Tees Newport Bridge. What there is is well maintained and in good repair.
