Weardale Way Update (S3&4)

We’re happy to say that the footbridge across the Rookhope Burn leading into Rookhope village at the end of Section 3 (or beginning of Section 4) is now OPEN. The bridge lies inconspicuously alongside an imposing sliding gate which, when it’s closed, might make it look like there’s no access. The Rookhope Inn however, remains closed with no signs of it reopening so there’s not much point in proceeding into the village if you’re looking for hospitality (apart from previously booked accommodation at the adjacent Barrington Bunkhouse). There’s a small shop on the corner, not far from the pub, open between 9.00-11.30 am through the week I’m guessing (not sure what the situation would be on weekends).

Unless you have your own reason to stop at Rookhope, it’s likely you’ll be stringing sections 3 and 4 together in some fashion. You can either turn L at the end of the industrial units and continue uphill across Smailsburn Common on section 4 OR continue to use the previously published diversion.
