The Candle House

The old stone barn with the tin roof, standing unassumingly on the junction of Front Street and Scutterhill Bank in Westgate, Weardale, is called the Candle House. It’s believed that the building, which may date to the first half of the c18th, once had a thatched roof and, at some point in its history, was a site for manufacturing the candles of local lead miners – hence the name.
