West Tees Bridge

This attractive stone-arched bridge to which there is now no official access is one of two that were constructed solely to allow the Darlington to Barnard Castle Railway (absorbed two years later into the Stockton and Darlington Railway) to circumnavigate Selaby Park, part of the Raby Estates that belonging to the Duke of Cleveland. Although the Duke’s opposition must have cost the project a great deal of money, when it was finally completed in 1856 a station was provided for his exclusive use at Broomielaw, north-east of Barnard Castle.

West Tees Bridge is located across the River Tees approximately 1.5 km west of the village of Gainford in County Durham (OS Grid Ref NZ 158173)
