Section 7 of the Teesdale Way is 9 km (5.6 miles) from Whorlton Bridge to Gainford. From Whorlton Bridge the Teesdale Way generally follows the course of the river which after cascading over the limestone riverbed at the once popular recreation spot of Whorlton Lido, continues to flow through a narrow valley with low-lying but steep wooded bluffs in an otherwise gently rolling arable landscape.

The trail quickly rises to and stays alongside the escarpment passing Wycliffe Hall across the river and Stubb House away to the north as it makes its way to Winston Bridge just below the village of Winston itself. It then descends to river level followed by a short but steep ‘up-and-down’ to rejoin the river.

Thereafter the route is flat through riverside woodland to eventually join the road by way of the railway embankment leading on to West Tees Bridge. The short distance on-road to Gainford is broken up with a woodland detour to enjoy the simple delights of Gainford Spa. Finally, on entering the village via Low Road you pass Gainford Hall shortly before arriving at the village green.
