Pill Box (NZ441459)

pillbox-hawthorn-deneThis World War Two Type 22 pill box is publically accessible at Hawthorn Dene, between Easington and Seaham in County Durham (OS Grid Ref – NZ441459) at the back of the beach close to the viaduct at the entrance to the dene. It is typical of most of the pill boxes found in County Durham.

    Just about 200mtrs north of this pillbox and over the other side of the railway line are the remains of WW2 trenches with gun pits.
