Lumley Castle, near Chester le Street, is a fortified manor house dating from 1382 when Ralph Lumley was granted a ‘licence to crenellate’ or fortify it by Bishop Fordham and King Richard II. Ever since the Scottish Wars of Independence, Durham and the surrounding areas had been frequent targets for armies and raiding parties whose intention was to plunder and terrorise in the face of often weak English opposition.
